Network Performance Monitoring Service (perfSONAR)
KREONET operates a perfSONAR-based infrastructure to continuously monitor and test a wide range of network performance metrics.
Network Performance Metrics
Regular testing and monitoring of network performance metrics help identify potential issues early and enable rapid troubleshooting.
Key performance metrics and associated testing tools include:
- bandwidth: iperf, iperf3
- delay, latency: owamp, twamp, ping
- network path: traceroute
perfSONAR
perfSONAR is a network performance management framework that combines measurement tools for monitoring key network metrics, a scheduler that prevents test conflicts by coordinating exeion times, and an archive system for storing and retrieving test results.
- perfSONAR manages and exees test schedules using its built-in scheduling engine, pScheduler.
- perfSONAR also provides a web-based test archive and viewer, enabling users to easily check various network performance metrics and diagnose potential issues.
perfSONAR Test Points
perfSONAR is deployed on more than 2,000 servers worldwide. KREONET operates perfSONAR nodes at key domestic and international locations to monitor data transfer paths both within the KREONET backbone and between KREONET and external research networks.
In the research and education community, most perfSONAR servers are configured with test scheduling permissions set to "Everybody," allowing any user to initiate performance tests.
