Global Wireless Roaming Service (eduroam)

Eduroam is a secure, worldwide Wi-Fi access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows users to connect to Wi-Fi at participating institutions across the globe using their home institution credentials—at no additional cost. The service is widely deployed across research and education institutions in the US and Europe, and a growing number of universities in Korea are also part of the global eduroam federation.

How to Use eduroam

If your institution is part of the eduroam federation, you can typically connect using the following configuration:
  • SSID: eduroam
  • Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
  • Username (Identity): Your institutional email-style login (e.g., gdhong@hankuk.ac.kr)

    * ROADM: For example, if you are from Hankuk University (hankuk.ac.kr) and your Wi-Fi ID is gdhong, your eduroam ID will be gdhong@hankuk.ac.kr.

  • Password: The same password you use for your institution’s Wi-Fi or identity system

Federation Partners of the eduroam

  • Global eduroam: The internet originated from computer networks developed to support research and education. Eduroam is a global, non-profit initiative that promotes collaboration in research and education by enabling seamless Wi-Fi access across institutions. The global eduroam infrastructure is jointly operated by major research and education networks worldwide, including G&Eae;ANT (Europe), Internet2 (USA), and AARNet (Australia).
  • KREONET: In 2012, the KREONET entered into an agreement with the global eduroam initiative and has since operated the eduroamKR service on behalf of the Korea
  • eduroam Operations Center for the University: KREN provides information services to universities via wired and wireless networks, and supports the shared use of campus Wi-Fi through its contribution to eduroam.
  • Participating Institutions in eduroamKR: eduroamKR is operated through the voluntary contributions of participating institutions to promote research and education. These institutions provide Wi-Fi networks as well as institution-specific academic information services, offering practical support for eduroam users such as visiting researchers and exchange students by enabling a seamless research and education environment without borders

  • What is my eduroam ID? : Your eduroam ID is managed directly by your institution. Please contact your institution’s IT support team for assistance.
  • How can I register for eduroam? : Individuals cannot register for eduroam directly. Instead, the IT administrator of your institution must the required documents to eduroamKR for institutional registration. If you are an IT administrator, please contact the eduroamKR helpdesk.
  • How can I check if my institution can be connected to eduroam? : To connect to eduroam, your institution must be able to configure a RADIUS realm on its Wi-Fi controller. eduroam authenticates users by checking the realm portion of their Wi-Fi ID; if the realm does not match the local institution, the authentication request is forwarded to the appropriate federated institution.
