디지털 대전환 시대 국가 과학기술혁신을 위한 초고성능 국가 데이터 네트워크, KREONET

KREONET (Korea Research Environment Open Network)

KREONET is a high-performance backbone network connecting 18 regional network centers across Korea, offering transmission speeds ranging from 200 Gbps to 1.2 Tbps depending on the segment. It not only connects to international research networks through GLORIAD but also integrates with domestic and international Internet Exchanges (IX), providing both research network and internet services to approximately 200 member institutions.

KREONET Backbone Network

1. Optical Backbone Network
  • The 18 regional network centers are interconnected via 600 Gbps per wavelength optical backbone rings* (using ROADM and PTN technologies) across five main 600 Gbps optical backbone rings. The Seoul-Daejeon segment achieves speeds up to 1.2 Tbps, with other regions connected via multi-hundred Gbps links.
  • ROADM (Re-configurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer) allows flexible wavelength management.
  • PTN (Packet Transport Network) is the foundation for packet-based transmission.
2. Data Backbone Network
  • The optical backbone network integrates with mid-to-large-sized routers, forming KREONET’s L2/L3 backbone network. Institutions connected to KREONET can access the data backbone network at speeds ranging from 1 Gbps to 400 Gbps, depending on their needs.

KREONET Regional Network Centers

Each regional center is equipped with high-performance backbone nodes, including optical transmission equipment, high-performance switching and routing devices, and performance management servers. This infrastructure ensures that regional research institutions and researchers can connect to the network quickly and reliably, contributing to the development of local research activities.

Research institutions or researchers typically connect to their nearest regional network center via dedicated lines, providing them with stable access to KREONET’s high-speed network for their scientific and technological research needs.

KREONET Regional Network Center Operations Committee

The KREONET Regional Network Center Operations Committee aims to enhance the operational stability of the KREONET backbone by strengthening the cooperative framework between regional network centers. This effort is intended to maximize the availability of research network services and ensure reliable network operations.

To achieve this, the committee focuses on:

  • Establishing a strong cooperative framework among the regional network centers.
  • Revising operational systems and regulations.
  • Reinforcing the role of regional network centers as research hubs to promote research activities through the local research network

The KREONET Regional Network Center Operations Committee, initiated in 2022, holds meetings twice a year (once each in the first and second halves of the year) to discuss these operational goals and ensure the smooth functioning of the regional network centers.
