KREONET

Ultra-high-performance network for national science and technology innovation

KREONET (Korea Research Environment Open Network)

KREONET operates a high-performance backbone network based on 18 regional network centers nationwide, supporting transmission capacities ranging from 100 Gbps to 1.2 Tbps per segment. It is globally interconnected through KREONet2 & KRLight (KREONET international backbone network) and connected to the commercial internet via both domestic and international Internet Exchanges (IXs). KREONET delivers both research network services and internet connectivity to approximately 200 member institutions nationwide.

KREONET Backbone Network

1. Optical Backbone Network

KREONET’s nationwide backbone infrastructure connects 18 regional network centers through five high-capacity optical backbone rings, each leveraging ROADM*/PTN**-based single-lambda 600 Gbps transmission technology. This architecture enables scalable connectivity, supporting up to 1.2 Tbps between Seoul and Daejeon, with several hundred Gbps-level links connecting other regional sites.

* ROADM: Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer

** PTN: Packet Transport Network

2. Data Backbone Network

KREONET establishes its L2/L3 data backbone network by directly connecting mid- to large-scale routers to its optical backbone infrastructure. Research institutions can access this high-capacity network through regional network centers, with scalable bandwidth ranging from 1 Gbps to 400 Gbps depending on their research and operational requirements.

KREONET Regional Network Centers

KREONET Regional Network Centers are equipped with high-performance backbone nodes, including optical transmission equipment, high-capacity switching and routing equipment, and performance monitoring servers. These centers provide a stable and high-speed connection platform for local research institutions and researchers, contributing to the advancement of regional research activities.

  • Affiliated institutions or researchers connect to KREONET through the nearest regional center using dedicated lines.

KREONET Regional Network Center Operations Committee

The KREONET Regional Network Center Operations Committee is dedicated to strengthening collaborative operations with regional centers to ensure the stable performance of the KREONET backbone and to maximize the availability and reliability of research network services for the science and technology community.

To achieve this, the committee promotes collaborative engagement among regional centers, refines operational procedures and governance policies, and strengthens the role of each center as a regional research hub—contributing to the advancement of scientific research and innovation at the regional level.

The KREONET Regional Network Center Operations Committee, initiated in 2022, holds meetings twice a year (once each in the first and second halves of the year)
